This fabulous rustic coffee table began its life in India as a daybed known in India as a takhat. These were originally used as daybeds by the wealthy merchant classes in Rajasthan.
This takhat is from Nagaur, approximately 90 miles north of Jodhpur. Unusually, this particular table is constructed from sheesham wood whilst most are constructed from roheda wood. The planks are beautifully wild and curved which adds to the overall rustic character. It's lovingly constructed integrating the edges of the sapwood into the overall design. As the trees in the desert grow slower, the craftsman had to utilize the white sapwood which has become a design feature. The hand beaten iron hobnails are both functional and add to its rustic charm.
